As one of the Independent Reading Projects in English class this past term, the Grade 8 students were introduced to autobiographies. The books selected by the students ranged from footballer Beth Mead’s Lioness: My Journey to Glory and surfer Bethany Hamilton’s Soul Surfer to Elie Wiesel’s Night.
After reading, students wrote thoughtful book reviews. With soft jazz music setting the mood and A3 prints of their work displayed throughout the classroom, they spent a lesson walking through a “Gallery of Reviews.” They read and commented on their peers’ reviews, gaining insight into the lives of some remarkable individuals.
