As part of their Unit of Inquiry Let’s Build, under the Transdisciplinary Theme How the World Works, the Senior Kindergarten students have been inquiring into why different building materials are used in different parts of the world.
We focused on tiled houses, particularly those in Portugal, where many are built with bricks and covered in colourful tiles. We discussed some of the possible reasons and decided the tiles help reflect the sun, keep out wind and rain, and make the houses look beautiful.
To make our own tiled houses, each student chose a tile to colour in, which was then photocopied (and slightly reduced in size) many times over so we could ‘build’ our own tiled houses. You can see the original tiles created by the students in each of the pictures.
