Life at ISL

Integration

Our new students’ well being and comfort are extremely important to us and we do our best to help them feel at home as quickly as possible. Before starting school, new families are contacted by an ISL mentor family who ensures they are comfortable in their new environment and ‘shows them the ropes’ in terms of school life and living in Lyon. Students often get to know each other before starting school and families are invited to attend various PTA welcome events. All new arrivals are welcomed into school by their class or homeroom teacher and assigned a buddy (along with the whole class who are always eager to help new students feel at home) to help them settle in and adapt to their new school life and the wonderful ISL community.

School times

The school is open from 8:05 every weekday morning, with lessons for all beginning at 8:20. For students from Kindergarten to Grade 10, school finishing times are 15:35 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 12:05 on Wednesdays and 14:55 on Fridays. IB Diploma students (Grades 11 and 12) have a variable timetable, however. Depending on their chosen options, they must be in school by 8:20 Monday – Friday but may leave school after the end of their last timetabled lesson which could be until 16:15 or later on some days.

Lunches

Families choose between a packed lunch (microwaves available in all lunchrooms) or, for Grades 5–12, a selection in a ‘connected’ refrigerated vending machine with fresh products renewed daily. Cards for this are available from the office and refilled online. We hope to extend this to other classes soon. We have pizza days every second Friday, and funds raised go to charity, various school-based activities or the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Students may bring a separate snack for the morning break. We encourage a well balanced diet, so snacks should be as healthy as possible. Fizzy drinks and energy drinks are not allowed in school. ISL is committed to protecting the environment and asks students and families to practise a ‘waste-free’ lunch policy wherever possible.

After school care

A child-care service is available at extra cost on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays until 17.30 and on Fridays until 17.00. Please contact the office for details.

Transport and crossing patrol

There is no dedicated school bus service as yet but public transport to the school is frequent and reliable, with the no. 8 bus running to and from Perrache railway station and transport hub where you can take trams and the subway to other destinations (tcl.fr). The school works with an outside security guard who supervises the zebra crossing in front of the school every day at drop-off and pick-up times. For security reasons, only staff and visitors’ cars are allowed on the premises. Parking is available at Bibliotèque de La Mulatière on Chemin de la Bastéro.
