ISL calculator policy for Grades 9 - 12

The acquisition of skills in the use of graphic display calculators is one of the objectives of the Mathematics programmes at the International School of Lyon. All three Mathematics courses of the IB Diploma Programme rely extensively on graphic display calculators. In order to help our students to prepare adequately for these programmes, graphic display calculator skills will be taught from grade 9 onwards.

For the smoothness and efficiency of the teaching of these skills, it is important that all students have identical models of calculators, with instruction handbooks in English language. The school can provide, from a UK supplier, Texas Instruments TI 84 Plus graphics calculators, and 9 - 12th grade students who do not already possess a TI 83 Plus or TI 84 Plus are invited to purchase one from the school at the cost price of 105 Euros.

These calculators are the most widely used type in High-school settings in general, and in IB programmes and examinations in particular. Their most recent edition, the TI 84, allows data sharing among different calculators, and display through an OHP implement or a data projector. At ISL, students will need them for both the IGCSE and IB Mathematics and Science courses, in the classroom and for homework assignments.
