The Staff  

ISL's teaching staff is culturally diverse and, whilst all being qualified in their native country to teach their specialist curriculum areas, teachers also follow specific IBO workshops and related conferences to ensure that the pedagological philosophy and quality of the IBO are maintained. Continued professional development is a requirement for all staff members. 

  

  
  Donna Philip

Donna Philip

  

  

Director: 

Donna Philip, British/French.  

Raised in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Wales. Studies in English Literature (her teaching subject) and French completed with an MBA in Educational Management. 30 years in international education and management.  Donna is also a keen swimmer, hiker, cross-country skier and kitchen gardener.

She is the current President of ELSA France.

  

  

 Mike Ford

  

  

Curriculum Coordinator & Science Teacher:

Mike Ford, British.    

MA Chemistry Oxford University. PGCSE Science Bath University. Previous positions as teacher and head of department at schools in the UK, France and Switzerland.

IB deputy chief examiner and workshop leader for chemistry, as well as assistant examiner for Theory of Knowledge, Mike  has  also published chemistry text books used in schools worldwide.

  

Ros Ford

 

  

Middle Years Coordinator & Geography/Science Teacher :

Ros Ford, British.

MA Geography Cambridge University, PGCSE Institute of Education, London. Ros has taught Geography and Sciences in schools in the UK, India, France and Switzerland and has extensive experience with the IBO's Middle Years Programme (MYP) - France is the place she most likes to live in though!

  

  

Alison Pattinson

 

  

Primary Coordinator & Primary school teacher (Grade 1 & 2):

Alison Pattinson, British

B.Ed in Primary Education followed by M.A. in Education (Management) and N.P.Q.H. from the National College for School Leaders, 14 years teaching experience within the UK and France in an international context. Previous positions have included Deputy Head Teacher and Primary Consultant (Numeracy). Alison enjoys reading, cooking and when feeling more energetic, yoga!

  

 

         Simon Burchill

  

  

Primary School Teacher (Grades 3 & 4):

Simon Burchill, British

After a first degree in English and History in Liverpool, obtained a P.G.C.E. from Westminster College, Oxford University.  Has taught for ten years in primary schools in the U.K. co-ordinating maths, ICT and music.  Enjoys literature, any sport and is a keen guitar player.

  

  

  

         Kelsey Corcoran

  

  

Primary school teacher (Kindergarten):

Kelsey Corcoran, Canadian.

From the west coast of Canada. Studies in Elementary education, English literature and Linguistics. Previous positions as teacher in Canada, Sweden and Japan. Kelsey  is a sports enthusiast involved in biking and climbing and is also passionate about food and photography.

  

  

    Barbara Williams

 

  

Primary school teacher (Grade 5): 

Barbara Williams, British.

Studies in Primary education and English and American studies in Wales and England. Barbara has taught at different schools in the UK, including several years on the Scottish Isle of Skye. She is also a keen outdoor activities leader.

  

       

       Simon Beaudouin

  

  

Art teacher:

Simon Beaudouin, French

Studies in Art and Design and Education  in Great Britain where he worked for several years before transferring to Shanghai. Simon is now back on home ground but happy to be continuing in a thriving international school community.

  

        

         Steve Harton

  

Biology / Maths / ICT Teacher:

Steve Harton, Canadian

Steve is a French Canadian who has been living in Europe since 1999. He has been teaching for 16 years at all levels, working with different educational programmes in several different countries. He has a degree in Biology, but being an all rounder, he is  currently teaching Biology, Mathematics, and ICT at ISL.

  

  

        

        Alison Mummery

  

  

English & Drama Teacher:

Alison Mummery, British

BA Honours degree from Liverpool and PGCE from Manchester.  Ms Mummery was brought up in France and England and has taught all ages in a variety of schools and colleges in England.  She is an English and Drama specialist and enjoys photography, theatre and yoga.

  

        

       Nora Palmieri Trout

  

English Teacher:

Nora Palmieri Trout, American

M.A.'s in Education and in French Language and Literature. 18 years in the U.S. teaching teachers and students (K-12) in a reading and discussion programme. Nora has also helped test and develop classroom resources, run summer reading camps and taught in Brazil and the U.S. She and her family are avid travelers who moved to Lyon “for the experience".

  

  

Zsofia Jakab Alibaux  

  

ESOL teacher: 

Zsofia Jakab Alibaux, Hungarian.

University studies in French Language/Literature and Psychology/Pedagogy. Taught French as a Foreign Language and ESL in an international school in Budapest. Speaks native Hungarian and French, fluent English and some German and loves outdoor activities and horse riding. Zsofia was also the presenter of an animal rights radio show for several years.

  

  

Sylvie Henderson  

  

Modern Languages & Summer School Coordinator and French teacher:

Sylvie Henderson, French.

Studies in French and English in Saint Etienne, PGCE University of Leicester. Previous positions as French teacher and Head of School Trips department in several schools in the UK and at the Munich International School. Sylvie is also a certified basket-ball trainer.

  

  

        

          Sylvie Bonci

 

French teacher:

Sylvie Bonci, French

Studies in French literature at the University of Grenoble; PGCE Jordanhill in Glasgow, Sylvie worked for 8 years in Scotland at the International School of Aberdeen. Teaches French at ISL but also ESOL in the Summer School Programme and other schools in the area.

  

       

        Béatrice Gillet

  

French Teacher:

Béatrice Gillet, French

French MBA (EDHEC). Worked 12 years for a large French industrial company followed by ten years in the Netherlands where she took a teaching degree in French as a foreign language. Worked in Amsterdam International Community School and then ISL, having completed studies with a Master 1, also in French as a foreign language.

  

Martin Porter  

  

History teacher:

Martin Porter, British.

MA European Studies, Harvard University; Dr. Phil in Modern History, Oxford University. Previous positions as teacher and researcher in England (Oxford), Italy (Florence) and Denmark (Copenhagen). Mr. Porter is a keen digital film-maker, and has worked as a consultant to British and Danish television channels.

He is also a published historical author.

  

Catherine Krylova

 

  

Mathematics teacher: 

Catherine Krylova, Russian.

Studies of Mathematics at Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. Previous positions in IB schools in Moscow, Hong-Kong (UWC Lee Po Chung) and Vienna. Ms. Krylova also teaches Computer Science, and has experience with running large computer networks. She is a certified English/Russian translator and interpreter.

  

       

  Hannah James Carlisle

  

Music teacher (secondary):

Hannah James Carlisle, American.

A native of San Francisco, Hannah holds a Master’s degree in musicology. She has taught flute, piano and music theory for over ten years, and is continuing her own studies in classical flute. As well as speaking English and French, she is currently learning baby talk from her 2-year-old son.  

  

                                  

      

      Garth Lombard

  

Music teacher (primary); PE teacher (secondary):

Garth Lombard (British).  

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, Garth has a Higher Diploma in Education from JCE (South Africa) and a Bachelor of Arts in both music and speech communication from OBU, Arkansas, USA.

Garth hasaught at various schools in South Africa, USA and the UK as either a PE teacher or Head of Music. He enjoys the outdoors, international travel, and writing children's stories, songs and plays.  He is currently teaching primary school music and grade 9/10 PE at ISL.

  

  

  

Sylvie Vitelli  

 

Physical Education Teacher/CAS Coordinator:

Sylvie Vitelli, French.

Sylvie is from Paris originally but studies in tourism led her to New York where she worked at the French Consulate and at the Lycée Français. After her return to France where she qualified in Sports and Education, she joined ISL at its opening in 2004. She is a certified lifeguard and a competitive multi-sport athlete who participates in top level marathons and triathlons.

  

  

       

             Kati Goor

  

Science and maths teacher:  

Kati Goor, Australian/Hungarian

Educated and trained in Australia (Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronics), Kati  joined ISL this year  to teach a mix of science and maths at different levels in the secondary school. She is a keen traveller and has visited different parts of Europe, Mexico, the US, Canada and Thailand.

  

  

Anna Salvadore

  

School Librarian:

Anna Salvadore, Italian.

Anna has been working in the library since the opening of the school in 2004.Before arriving in France in 2001 she lived in Algeria , Egypt, Belgium and Germany.

She enjoys skiing, travelling - and reading of course!

  

  

Marie-Pierre Chuong  

  

School Secretary:

Marie-Pierre Chuong, French.

Secretarial and English studies in Lyon. Departmental secretary in several small and medium size companies in the Lyon area and, prior to her move to ISL, in a music school. Marie-Pierre is an active classical dancer and pilates practitioner.

      Michel Gamay  

  

  

Caretakers:

Martine and Michel Gamay, French.

Monsieur and Madame Gamay are from Valenciennes in the North of France and take care of the school building and its premises. Mr. Gamay worked for many years as a milling machine operator in a metallurgical company, and Mrs. Gamay was previously the caretaker of a residential complex. Both are expert gardeners. The move south was to enable them to be closer to their thirteen grandchildren.
